Indigo Refuge
The house was designed for a local, Smithsonian artist who has spent most her life traveling and dedicating her life to a particular form of art called Batik. Batik is characterized by the making of fabrics with a die that is itself made by the artist via a natural process.
In this case in particular, the Indigo flower which is left to ferment in water and ashes to create the color indigo became the main focus. The artist was a guest of honor in Nigeria where she was celebrated during a ten year tenure, this experience and others have defined her strong spiritual connection to nature and the color indigo. This inspired the architect to design a home for art-making and celebrating nature.
